What the number actually means
The Kua number comes from the Eight Mansions method, which divides people into two groups. East group numbers are one, three, four and nine. West group numbers are two, six, seven and eight. Each group has four favorable compass directions and four to avoid, and the four favorable ones carry different classical roles: prosperity, health, love and stability.
The useful part is not the number itself, it is the four directions it gives you. Those are the directions to face when the choice is genuinely yours, at a desk, in bed, or at a table.
Why the February 4 cutoff changes the answer
The Chinese solar year begins on February 4, not January 1. Someone born on January 20, 1990 belongs to solar year 1989, and their Kua number is different from someone born in June of the same calendar year. For a man those two dates land in opposite direction groups, which means opposite advice. A calculator that asks only for a birth year cannot get that right.
What this tool cannot tell you
Your Kua number is about you, not about your home. It does not know which way your house faces, which side of the building the year's chart lands on, or what sits around your property. It also says nothing about which room is which, because nothing about a birth date could. Those come from your address.

Why do you ask for my full birth date and not just the year?
Because the Chinese solar year does not begin on January 1. It begins on February 4. Anyone born between January 1 and February 3 belongs to the previous solar year, which changes their Kua number and can move them into the opposite direction group. A calculator that asks only for the year gets those birthdays wrong.
Why is there no Kua number 5?
The arithmetic can produce a five, but five sits at the center of the grid and has no compass direction of its own. Classical practice resolves it to two for men and eight for women, and this calculator applies that rule automatically.
How do I actually use my four directions?
Use them whenever you get to choose which way you face. Point your headboard toward one of them while you sleep, face one while you work at a desk, and take the seat that faces one at a table. You do not need to face a favorable direction at all times, only when the choice is genuinely yours.
Does my Kua number ever change?
No. It comes from your birth date, so it stays the same for life. What changes each year is the annual chart that lands on your home, which is why the same four directions can feel different from one year to the next.
